Born to a trader father and a mother from Dutch nobility, she moved to England at the age of five to attend a boarding school in the suburbs of London due to the war.
When her parents divorced, she moved to the Netherlands and began taking ballet lessons.
In 1948, she and her mother moved back to England. In London, she enrolled at the Marie Lambert Ballet School and made her stage debut as a chorus girl in the musical “High Button Shoes” that same year.
After appearing in several films in England, she was cast in the lead role in the Broadway stage production of “Gigi” in 1951, and was chosen by William Wyler, who saw the play, to play the lead in “Roman Holiday” (1953).
The film won her the Academy Award for Best Actress and made her a star.
Since then, she has starred in blockbusters such as “Sabrina the Beauty” (54), “The Nun” (59), “Breakfast at Tiffany's” (61), and “My Fair Lady” (64), and has become an icon in the film and fashion worlds.
In her later years, she served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and devoted herself to aid activities for impoverished areas in Africa, South America, and Asia.
In 1992, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the United States for his work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
The following year, in 1993, he died of rectal cancer at his home in Trosna, Switzerland, at the age of 63.
